Penn’s Transforming the Generation and Adoption of PCOR in Practice (T-GAPP) K12 program, funded by AHRQ/PCORI, is accepting applications for 2020-2021. We ask that you encourage eligible instructors and early assistant professors to apply. AHRQ and PCORI require that we recruit some Scholars from outside institutions, so please consider both new and recent recruits to your department.

This program is designed to advance the nation’s leadership capacity in deploying patient-centered outcomes research within learning health systems (LHS). The aim of this K12 program is to support junior faculty who seek academic careers as independent investigators in LHS/PCOR through training in the generation, adoption, and implementation of evidence that improves the quality and safety of health care.

Scholars will receive two years of support, including $80,000 in salary support plus research funds up to $25,000 for each year of the program. They must devote at least 75% effort to research career development activities associated with this award over the two years. Those wishing to pursue course work may use research fund expenses towards tuition.

Program Overview:
• Completion of three required courses: Methods in Patient Centered Outcomes and Effectiveness Research (EPID 624); Principles and Practices of Healthcare Quality Improvement (HQS 612); and Implementation Science in Health and Healthcare (HPR 611)
• Participation in HQS 602: Learning Health System Seminar Series.
• Additional training toward a Master’s degree is optional. Scholars may enroll in one of three degree programs: Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE), Master of Science in Health Policy Research (MSHP), or Master of Healthcare Innovation (MCHI)
• A practicum within Penn Medicine’s Center for Health Care Innovation
• Formal training in leadership development
• Stakeholder engagement through the PSOM Community Engagement and Research (CEAR) Core
• Development and completion of a research project in PCOR/LHS under the direction of a mentorship team
• Guided development of at least one grant proposal (such as a K-series or R-series award)
• Participation and presentations at national meetings of PCOR and LHS research
Candidates must:
• be clinicians (e.g., physicians, nurses, pharmacists, clinical psychologists)
• be early Assistant Professor rank (within 2 years of appointment at time of application) or Instructors with plans to be appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor appointment by 2nd year of K12 support
• have guarantee of full-time appointment from their primary department for 2 years
• devote at least 75% effort to the K12 training
• seek careers as independent investigators in LHS/PCOR
• be US citizens, non-citizen US nationals, or be lawfully admitted to the US for permanent
• are not and have not been a Principal Investigator on an R01 or R21 award, on a component of a
Program Project (P01), Center Grant (P50, P60, or U54), mentored career development grant (Kseries),
or other equivalent research award, or peer-reviewed non-Federal research
grants/contracts/cooperative agreements over $100,000 direct costs per year

Personal Statement (no more than 1 page), Research proposal with explicit aims (1 page) including how
proposal will incorporate stakeholders, CV, academic transcripts from all degree granting institutions, 3
letters of recommendation (one letter should be from Division Chief/Department Chair and include
commitment to faculty position).
